Narodowy Bank Polski

Banknotes and coins

General information

Under the Act on Narodowy Bank Polski of 29 August 1997, Narodowy Bank Polski (NBP) holds the exclusive right to issue the currency of the Republic of Poland. The currency issued by NBP consists of banknotes and coins.

The coins issued by Narodowy Bank Polski fall into two categories: coins for general circulation, with high mintages, used as cash at face value, and collector coins, minted in limited editions, primarily for coin collectors at home and abroad.

Approval for the reproduction of the banknote and coin designs

Narodowy Bank Polski, as the issuer and the owner of the property rights to the banknote and coin designs, reserves the right to grant individually its approval for the reproduction of the designs of banknotes and coins in order to exclude any case of their copying in any form, which devalues the Polish money.

NBP does not consent to:

  • the use of the images of banknotes and coins in order to advertise the substances which may be harmful for health and life if overused
  • the reproduction of the images of banknotes and coins in a way that may suggest their destruction, e.g. crumpling, perforation, breaking or cutting
  • the folding of banknotes into different shapes.

Having regard to the fact that NBP needs to ensure the safety of banknote circulation, such an approval is secured with the requirement to reproduce only one side of the banknotes, the size of which must be larger than 125 % or smaller than 75 % of the length and width of the original note.

In addition, according to the Act on Copyright and Related Rights of 4 February 1994 (Journal of Laws No. 90, item 631 as amended) which provides for the protection of personal copyrights, the author's permission is needed in order to use his work. Neither the elements nor the entire work that is put into circulation as legal tender nor its elaboration for other purposes than the ones connected with its official function as legal tender may be used without the author's permission.

In view of the above, in order to obtain approval for the use of the images of the banknote or coin designs, one should submit to NBP a letter containing the following information:

  1. Applicant’s data
  2. Description of the venture, i.e.:
    • which notes/coins will be used (front/back side of the note, obverse/reverse of the coin, denomination),
    • the type of the venture,
    • the name of the entity which commissioned the project,
    • the type of a data carrier on which the project will be placed.

The letter shall include the final project of an advertisement and, in the case of a commercial film, the film itself together with the storyboard.

Due to the necessity of analysing the project, it is suggested to send it, if possible, not later than fourteen days before finalising the venture.
