Jacek Bartkiewicz was born in 1954. He is a graduate of the Department of Production Economics at the Warsaw School of Economics and holds a PhD in Economics at the Academy of Social Sciences. In 1978-1990 he worked in the Institute for Political Economics and International Economic Relations (since 1984 renamed as Academy of Social Sciences).
From 2002 to March 2013 he was the Chairman of the Management Board of the BGŻ bank. In 2001-2002 he was Under Secretary of State in the Ministry of Finance, supervising financial institutions and accounting, and responsible for national economy, regional policy and agriculture. Previously, from 1990, he was professionally involved with Bank Śląski, where from 1997 to 2001 he occupied the post of Deputy Chairman of the Management Board, and earlier held the post of a member of the Management Board (1996-1997). In 1994-1996 he was the director of the Warsaw region at the Bank Śląski and from 1990 to 1994 the director of the Warsaw branch of this bank.
From 2004 to 2006 he was the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Warsaw Stock Exchange, and in 2001- 2002 a Deputy Chairman of the Commission for Banking Supervision, a Deputy Chairman of the Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Commission, as well as the Chairman of the Committee of the Export Credit Insurance Corporation Joint Stock Company. In 2000-2001 Jacek Bartkiewicz held the post of a Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Śląski Bank Hipoteczny and was a member of the Management Board of the Polish Bank Association. From 1999 to 2001 he was the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Dom Maklerski BSK brokerage house. Since 2004 he has been a member of the Economic Practice Council, an advisory and consultative body at the Polish Economic Society.
On 2 April 2013, President Bronisław Komorowski appointed Jacek Bartkiewicz a member of the Management Board of Narodowy Bank Polski.
