Jan Winiecki
Born on 21 June 1938 in Sopot.

He begun his study in the Department of Foreign Trade of the Central School of Planning and Statistics (at present Warsaw School of Economics), then he continued it at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Warsaw, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1971, and his postdoctoral degree in international political economy in 1978.

During his long-term research and teaching career he served as: Head of the Economic Policy Unit at the Centre for Scientific, Technical and Economic Information (1971-1973), research worker at the Polish Institute of International Affairs (1973-1982), then researcher at the Unit of Management Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences (1982-1984). In 1994-2003, he was a professor and Head of the Chair of International Economic Relations at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder). Since 2003, he has served as a professor at the University of Information Technology and Management in Rzeszów.

In 1985-1989 he was a member of so-called “Konwersatorium”, a group of economic advisors for the Solidarity trade union, led by professor Bronisław Geremek. In 1989, he was one of the founder members of the Adam Smith Centre in Poland. In 1991, he was a member of the Political Advisory Committee to the President of Poland. Executive Director at the EBRD in London (1991-1993). Member of the finance minister’s advisory macroeconomic council (1998-2000). For four terms the President of the Council of Polish Society of Economists. From 2000, economic advisor to WestLB Bank Polska SA.

For many years he has specialised in comparative study of political systems, macroeconomics and international economic relations. Author of numerous publications and books issued mainly in English. He often publishes papers in economic and political magazines.

On 13 January 2010, the Senate of the Republic of Poland appointed Mr Jan Winiecki as a member of the Monetary Policy Council.

He died on 7 June 2016.
