The Department's primary responsibilities include:
  • Carrying out periodic analyses and evaluations of domestic currency stocks and forecasting the circulation of notes and coins of particular denominations,
  • Preparing the issue of domestic currency and collaboration with the companies producing notes and coins, i.e. with the Polish Security Printing Works and the Mint of Poland,
  • Ensuring that the NBP holds a stock of domestic currency that is adequate in terms of volume and composition to supplement the notes and coins in circulation as required,
  • Developing rules and systemic solutions on the organisation of supply of domestic currency to banks and other entities authorised by law to withdraw the currency from NBP and deposit it with NBP,
  • Conducting expert appraisals of domestic and foreign currencies and issuing opinions on their authenticity,
  • Striving to maintain the quality of notes and coins, and their security features to protect them against counterfeiting,
  • Exchanging worn and damaged domestic notes and coins,
  • Conducting the sale and purchase of gold and other precious metals in transactions with domestic and foreign counterparts, and administering the Bank's stock of precious metals,
  • Selling coins, notes and medals issued as collector items,
  • Publishing an album illustrating specimen foreign currencies, and performing reciprocal exchange of currency specimens with other central banks,
  • Cooperating with institutions of the European Union and other foreign organizations in making preparations for production, issue and circulation of banknotes and coins in view of Poland's future accession to the euro area, as well as in counteracting banknote and coin counterfeiting.
