Banknotes and coins: structure of banknotes and coins in circulation, lodgements and withdrawals (cash supply), frequency rate of return

Starting from February 2015 the Cash and Issue Department has been publishing, at the end of each quarter, data on Polish banknotes and coins: denomination structure of banknotes and coins in circulation, lodgements of banknotes and coins at NBP and their withdrawals from NBP as well as frequency rate of return of banknotes and coins to NBP.

Time of releasing data: in the month following the end of each quarter.

Related detailed data with graphical presentation have been provided in graphs in the Excel files attached.

1. Structure of banknotes and coins in circulation

Circulation – volume (or value) of banknotes and coins for general circulation remaining in circulation at the end of each quarter and reduced by the volume (or value) of banknotes and coins:

  • kept in NBP's counters and vaults,
  • owned by NBP and deposited in vaults of commercial banks,
  • unfit and withdrawn from circulation by NBP.

2. Lodgements of banknotes and coins at NBP and their withdrawals from NBP (cash supply)

Volume (or value) of banknotes or coins lodged at NBP (lodgements) or withdrawn from NBP (withdrawals) in a given quarter by banks or other entities legally authorised to lodge or withdraw Polish currency.

Supplying banks and other entities with Polish currency is regulated by Article 68 item 2 of the Banking Act of 29 August 1997 and is the implementation of Article 37 of the Act of 29 August 1997 on Narodowy Bank Polski.

3. Frequency rate of return of banknotes and coins to NBP

Frequency rate of return in cycles is the quotient of a volume of banknotes or coins lodged at NBP by banks and other entities in last four quarters and an average volume of banknotes or coins in circulation in an analogous period of time. It demonstrates how many times on average, in last four quarters, a banknote or coin returned to NBP.

Frequency rate of return in days is the quotient of an average volume of banknotes or coins in circulation in last four quarters and a volume of banknotes or coins lodged at NBP by banks and other entities in an analogous period of time, multiplied by a numer of days (365). It demonstrates every how many days on average a banknote or coin returned to NBP.
