Press Announcement from the meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Working Group on the Integration of Poland with the Economic and Monetary Union

  1. The next meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Working Group of the National Bank of Poland (NBP) and the Ministry of Finance (MOF) on the integration of Poland with the Economic and Monetary Union was held on 1 September 2004. The meeting was chaired by Krzysztof Rybiński (NBP Deputy President) and Wiesław Szczuka (Undersecretary of State at the MOF).

  2. The subject matter of the meeting were the current macroconomic issues, the public finances situation and prospects of Poland accomplishing the nominal convergence criteria as defined in the Treaty Establishing the European Community. The official interpretation of the basis for these criteria as applied by the European Commission and the European Central Bank was also discussed.

  3. The formal and legal conditions for Poland's euro area entry date were also touched upon. Moreover, the approaching meeting of the MOF and NBP with representatives of the European Commission was discussed.

  4. There was a positive assessment of the current state of cooperation between the Ministry of Finance and the National Bank of Poland within the scope of issues discussed at the meeting of the Economic and Financial Committee (EFC) of the EU Council.

  5. The subject matter and scope of the Group's further work were discussed and it was decided that the next meeting would take place in October 2004.
