Press announcement from the meeting of the Interdepartmental Working Group on Poland's Integration with the Economic and Monetary Union

  1. The next meeting of the Interdepartmental Working Group on Poland's Integration with the Economic and Monetary Union of the Ministry of Finance (MOF) and the National Bank of Poland (NBP) was held on 6 October 2004. The meeting was chaired by Wiesław Szczuka (Undersecretary of State at the MOF) and Krzysztof Rybiński (NBP Deputy President).

  2. In the course of the meeting the most important current microeconomic issues were discussed including the situation of the public finance sector in view of the draft Budget Act for 2005. There was a presentation of the interdependences of the draft budget for 2005, the government Austerity Plan (Public Expenditure Reform and Reduction Programme), and Poland's proposed Convergence Programme.

  3. The prospects and conditions of Poland's entry to the ERM II and the euro area were also touched upon. In this context the experiences of Greece connected with its ERM II accession and membership were discussed, as well as Slovenia's experience of entering the ERM II.

  4. The participants exchanged views on the issues raised during the proceedings of the Economic and Financial Committee (EFC) concerning, inter alia, the changes in the Stability and Growth Pact proposed by the European Commission.

  5. The subject matter and scope of the Group's further work were discussed and it was decided that the next meeting will be held in November 2004.
