Poland’s Balance of Payments in April 2016
NBP data: In April 2016, the current account of the balance of payments posted a surplus in the services balance (PLN 4.5bn), balance of trade in goods (PLN 2.2bn) and secondary income (PLN 0.6bn) and a deficit in the primary income account (PLN 4.7bn). The balance of the combined current and capital accounts was positive and amounted to PLN 3.0bn.
Preliminary data on Poland’s balance of payments for April 2016, released by Narodowy Bank Polski on 13 June 2016, show a PLN 2.6bn surplus on the current account. In the corresponding month of 2015, the balance was positive and stood at PLN 3.7bn.
Exports of goods were PLN 65.2bn and were higher by PLN 7.0bn (i.e. 12.0%) than a year earlier. Imports of goods rose by PLN 4.3bn (or 7.3%) to PLN 63.0bn. As a result, the balance of trade in goods was positive and amounted to PLN 2.2bn. In April 2015, it was negative and stood at PLN 0.5bn.
Typically, the services balance was positive and amounted to PLN 4.5bn. Income from exports of services was PLN 14.6bn and represented a PLN 1.2bn (9.0%) rise on the April 2015 figure. Debits were PLN 10.1bn, having increased by PLN 0.7bn (7.5%) compared with the corresponding month of 2015.
The primary income balance was negative at PLN 4.7bn. In the corresponding month of 2015, it was also negative and stood at PLN 0.5bn. The negative primary income balance was predominantly driven by the negative balance of investment income (PLN 6.0bn).
