Poland’s balance of payments in March 2019

NBP data: In March 2019, the current account of the balance of payments posted surpluses on the service and goods trade accounts (of PLN 7.9bn and PLN 2.5bn, respectively), and deficits on the primary and secondary income accounts (of PLN 7.3bn and PLN 0.8bn, respectively). The balance of the combined current and capital accounts was positive at PLN 4.5bn.

Preliminary data on Poland’s balance of payments in March 2019, published by NBP on 14 May 2016, show a surplus of PLN 2.3bn on the country's current account. In the corresponding month of 2018, the balance was negative and stood at PLN 3.9bn.

Exports of goods amounted to PLN 84.5bn, thus being PLN 7.8bn (or 10.2%) higher than in the same month of 2018. Imports of goods rose by PLN 2.8bn (i.e. 3.6%), to reach PLN 82.0bn. The surplus on trade in goods stood at PLN 2.5bn. In the corresponding quarter of 2018, this balance was negative and amounted to PLN 2.4bn.

Typically, the service account was in surplus, amounting to PLN 7.9bn. Exports of services stood at PLN 20.7bn, representing an increase of PLN 2.1bn (or 11.3%) on the March figure. Imports of services amounted to PLN 12.9bn, having increased by PLN 1.0bn (or 8.8%) on the corresponding month of 2018.

The balance of the primary income account was negative at PLN 7.3bn and improved in relation to the same month of 2018 by PLN 0.3bn. The balance on this account was mainly determined by the negative balance of investment income (of PLN 6.6bn).
